Which skills matter for a dispatcher assessment?

CritiCall’s published test descriptions include map reading, short-term memory, comparing letter-and-number sequences, numerical ability and multitasking. Its library also covers keyboard data entry and comprehension. CritiCall now describes both Classic modules and a newer 3D format, so use the assessment information supplied by your hiring agency to set your priorities. See the official test descriptions.

The publisher’s candidate guide says that specialist dispatcher knowledge is not required. It emphasizes following the test’s supplied instructions and decision rules. Use the official practice items to learn how each section works before the scored questions begin. Read the candidate preparation guide.

Perceptual accuracySame or notDecide whether two codes match exactly. Look for transposed digits, missing characters and look-alikes such as 0 and O in a 90-second round.
Map reading and directionsMap readingLocate landmarks, follow turns and find the shortest permitted route through one-way streets in a 2-minute round.
Attention to remembered detailStreet scene and 2-back memoryRecall details after a scene disappears and update information as new items arrive.
Divided attentionPsychomotorKeep a tracking task going while handling another task at the same time.

Try two original practice questions

These Brain Preflight examples focus on checking and navigation.

1. Check a code precisely

Are these two codes exactly the same?

RX7B-4826
RX7B-4862

Show the answer and method

Different. The final two digits are swapped: 26 versus 62. Compare positions rather than reading the overall shape. Both codes contain the same characters, which makes this easy to miss.

2. Follow a permitted route

A destination is two blocks east and one block north of you. Each block has equal length. The first street east is one-way in the opposite direction. The street north is open, and the next parallel eastbound street is open. What is the shortest valid route?

Show the answer and method

One block north, then two blocks east: 3 blocks. Check whether a route is permitted before counting its length. The direct-looking eastbound start is invalid because of the one-way restriction.

A five-session daily dispatcher practice routine

  1. Same or not: begin with exact comparisons and notice which character positions you overlook.
  2. Map reading: distinguish a heading question from a shortest-route question.
  3. Street scene or 2-back memory: choose detailed recall or continuous memory updating.
  4. Psychomotor: practice maintaining one task while responding to another.
  5. Your choice: repeat the weakest task, or choose Calculation grid for arithmetic.

Review mistakes by cause: a transposition, a missed one-way arrow, a detail assigned to the wrong object or an interrupted tracking task. This gives you a specific target for the next session. Keep the same exercise for several sessions when you want to compare your progress.

Use the assessment’s own instructions

Before your test date, check your invitation for the assessment format, equipment and instructions. CritiCall’s applicant page links its candidate guide and sample keyboarding, proofreading and spelling tests. Keep those instructions alongside your daily practice plan.
