What should you practice for the NYPD written exam?

The NYPD’s official 2021 exam tutorial includes passage questions, applying supplied rules, arithmetic, diagrams and routes, and remembering details from a picture. Use that tutorial to understand the question styles, then organize repeat practice around the skills you want to strengthen. Read the official NYPD tutorial.

For another US police or civil-service application, start with the notice for your own exam: its skill mix determines your priorities. Keep a short error log with four headings: missed detail, direction, calculation and rule. After each practice session, record the specific mistake rather than only the final score.

Try two original practice questions

These short examples are written by Brain Preflight to illustrate a practice method.

1. Keep track of direction

You are facing east. Turn left, turn right, then turn right again. Which direction are you facing?

Show the answer and method

South. East → north → east → south. Update your heading after every turn. Left and right belong to your current heading; they do not always mean west and east.

2. Remember the right detail

Read once, then cover the sentence: “At 08:40, a blue van with plate K72M parked outside building 36. The driver carried a red bag.” What color was the bag, and which building was it outside?

Show the answer and method

A red bag, outside building 36. Group the scene into time, vehicle, location and person. Keep each detail attached to its object: a blue vehicle does not mean a blue bag.

A five-session daily police practice routine

  1. Street scene: use a fixed scan order, such as buildings → vehicles → people.
  2. Map reading: establish north first, then check the direction of each street.
  3. Same or not: compare character positions from left to right before increasing speed.
  4. Logic sequences or Calculation grid: choose the area that caused more errors yesterday.
  5. Your choice: repeat the exercise where you made the most avoidable mistakes.

Use the results to choose tomorrow’s work. For a memory miss, identify which category you skipped. For a map error, separate a wrong turn from an invalid route. A useful session leaves you with one concrete adjustment for the next attempt.
