What is the British Army Cognitive Test?

The Army’s soldier assessment page describes the Army Cognitive Test (Verifier) as five computer-based tests used to assess potential and inform the roles open to an applicant. Its linked Mindmill familiarisation lists Error Detection, Orientation, Number Fluency, Word Rules and Deductive Reasoning. Start with that official practice to understand the published formats.

This is a British Army guide. It is separate from RAF and Royal Navy DAA and RAF CBAT. The UK country guide compares those routes so you can choose the correct preparation.

Which five ACT skills are in Brain Preflight?

AreaPractice in the app
Error detectionCompare remembered sequences or details and identify differences.
OrientationRemember direction and overlap rules, then select the matching arrows.
Number fluencyCalculate two expressions, retain their results and decide which is larger or whether they are equal.
Word rulesRemember three categories in order and count words that match the category in the same position.
Deductive reasoningUse two rules to answer a comparison; select “Can’t tell” when the rules do not settle it.

Set the app language to English and choose British Army — Army Cognitive Test. You can open each of the five exercises individually. The app uses its own generated items and timed practice settings; it does not provide an official Army result, guarantee a role or reproduce every recruitment stage.

Can I try Army ACT practice questions with answers?

These are original examples of the app’s skill families. Try answering before opening the explanation. The Army-linked tool remains the place to learn the official familiarisation instructions.

Number fluency: compare 8 × 7 with 70 − 13. Which result is higher?

The first expression is 56 and the second is 57, so the bottom result is higher. In the app you retain each result as the display changes; this written example leaves both expressions visible.

Word rules: categories are Tool, Bird, Fruit. Words are Hammer, Apple, Robin. How many match in the same position?

Only Hammer matches Tool in its position, so the answer is 1. Apple is a fruit and Robin is a bird, but both appear in the wrong positions.

Deductive reasoning: Sam is taller than Priya. Leo is taller than Priya. Who is taller, Sam or Leo?

You cannot tell. Both are taller than Priya, but neither rule compares Sam with Leo. Do not add an ordering that the statements do not establish.

For another reasoning route, the DAA examples use different verbal, numerical and technical tasks. Keep each format’s instructions separate.

How should I prepare for the Army ACT?

Use the Army-linked practice to understand each format. The Army says you can repeat that tool and that it does not receive the practice results. Then use the app for a short routine: try each of its five ACT exercises, review the mistakes and choose a particular skill to revisit the next day.

This routine is a practice suggestion, not a required study period or a substitute for the Army’s instructions. The preparation questions guide explains how to use the five-session daily allowance.

What ACT score is needed, and what else is assessed?

The Army says the score affects the jobs you can pursue. Ask your recruiter about your intended role and current requirements instead of treating an app score as a conversion to an official result. This guide does not invent a universal pass mark or a retake waiting period.

ACT is one part of the soldier assessment process. The Army also describes medical, fitness, team and interview stages, plus literacy or numeracy testing where required by qualifications. Brain Preflight does not replace those stages. Use the official assessment page and your invitation to prepare the complete visit.

International military routes such as Canadian Armed Forces applications and Australian ADF selection have separate requirements. Their guides provide context, not an interchangeable ACT plan.

Frequently asked questions

Can I practise the Army Cognitive Test for free?

Yes. The Army links a free familiarisation tool, and Brain Preflight provides 5 free iPhone sessions every day for its own ACT-related exercises. You can choose any available exercise without a purchase or subscription.

What are the five Army ACT tests?

The Army-linked familiarisation lists Error Detection, Orientation, Number Fluency, Word Rules and Deductive Reasoning. Brain Preflight includes an English exercise for each of those skill families.

Does the Army receive my official practice-test results?

The Army’s assessment page says it does not receive results from the practice tool it links. That statement concerns its linked familiarisation, rather than a claim about every stage of the application.

Does a high app score qualify me for an Army job?

No. App scores and practice levels belong to Brain Preflight. The Army uses its own assessment result and role requirements. Ask your recruiter what your official result means for the role you want.

Is Army ACT the same as RAF DAA?

No. ACT is the five-test British Army route described here. DAA has six aptitude areas and is covered in our separate RAF and Royal Navy guide.
