Job Opportunities Assessment (JOA)

ADF Careers describes the JOA as general ability and mathematical ability questions. Its candidate guide, revised on 21 September 2026, covers numerical, verbal and abstract reasoning: 51 questions in 20 minutes after a familiarisation section. The guide allows up to three attempts, six months apart.

The same guide says study is unnecessary, suggests you avoid other practice websites, and says the ADF does not recommend or endorse any course or website. Start with the official guide and its examples. Brain Preflight is independent general skill practice; it does not promise a better result.

JOA areaBrain Preflight exercisesFit
Numerical reasoningCalculation grid; number families in Logic sequencesPartial: arithmetic checking and number patterns.
Verbal reasoningNoneNot covered. The English word games are vocabulary tasks, not verbal reasoning.
Abstract reasoningLogic sequences; Cube nets, Stacks, Sliding shapesPartial: symbolic series and spatial tasks. No figure-matrix exercise.
Timed mixed formatNoneThe app has no 51-question mixed test with a shared clock.

In the app, open Calculation grid and Logic sequences from the catalogue for short general practice. Do not treat a long queue of unrelated exercises as a JOA mock.

Officer Aviation selection

For the Air Force Officer Aviation role, ADF Careers describes a primary selection with interviews and an initial Officer Aviation Test Battery (OATB). Suitable candidates then attend a two-day Aviation Screening Program at RAAF Base East Sale, where aviation aptitude is assessed with the computer-based MACTS over two four-hour sessions. An Officer Selection Board may follow, with group activities, problem-solving exercises and an interview. The public page does not list the OATB or MACTS subtests.

Provisional routine: open Logic sequences, Calculation grid, Cube nets, Stacks, 3D objects, Shapes & colors, Psychomotor and Airways. It gives general practice in reasoning, calculation, spatial, attention and concurrent-task skills. It is not an OATB or MACTS simulation, and touchscreen tracking does not reproduce test equipment. Board exercises and interviews need separate preparation.

Practise with Brain Preflight

Brain Preflight is an iPhone app with short aptitude exercises: mental arithmetic, memory, spatial reasoning, attention and a psychomotor tracking task. Start with 5 free sessions immediately and get 5 more every day, choosing any exercise, without a purchase or subscription. Installed exercises work offline. Optional Premium adds unlimited sessions, mock exams and detailed diagnostics. The interface is available in English, French, German, Spanish and Dutch. The catalogue includes 32 exercises, accessible from All in each interface language. Some exercises use their original content language.

FAQ

Do I need to study for the ADF JOA?

The ADF says study is unnecessary and points candidates to its own guide. Use that first. Brain Preflight is optional general practice for numerical and logical skills.

Does Brain Preflight simulate MACTS?

No. MACTS subtests are not published, and the app’s touchscreen exercises do not reproduce its equipment or scoring.
