Start your 5 free ASTB practice sessionsWhat the ASTB-E covers
The ASTB-E has a Math Skills Test (MST), Reading Comprehension Test (RCT), Mechanical Comprehension Test (MCT), Aviation and Nautical Information Test (ANIT), the Naval Aviation Trait Facet Inventory (NATFI) and Performance Based Measures (PBM). Navy sources describe the PBM battery with spatial orientation, dichotic listening and stick-and-throttle tracking tasks. Check the Navy's official ASTB information for the current battery and retake rules.
How to practise
Study the knowledge sections (ANIT, MCT) with dedicated material. For speed and the PBM, short daily drills help: Brain Preflight's calculation grid for MST speed, cube and 3D-object exercises for spatial work, and the psychomotor exercise for tracking while answering other prompts. The app has no listening exercise, so it does not practise dichotic listening. These are related skills, not official ASTB items.
In the app, open these exercises from the catalogue: Calculation grid, Logic sequences, Cube nets, 3D objects, Stacks, Psychomotor, Airways and Shapes & colors.
Practise with Brain Preflight
Brain Preflight is an iPhone app with short aptitude exercises: mental arithmetic, memory, spatial reasoning, attention and a psychomotor tracking task. Start with 5 free sessions immediately and get 5 more every day, choosing any exercise, without a purchase or subscription. Installed exercises work offline. Optional Premium adds unlimited sessions, mock exams and detailed diagnostics. The interface is available in English, French, German, Spanish and Dutch. The catalogue includes 32 exercises, accessible from All in each interface language. Some exercises use their original content language.
Questions about your preparation
How can I practise ASTB-E skills for free?
Use Brain Preflight’s 5 free daily iPhone sessions for arithmetic, spatial reasoning and divided attention. Add dedicated reading, mechanical and aviation study using the Navy resources linked in this guide. App exercises practise related skills, rather than official ASTB-E questions.
Does Brain Preflight cover every ASTB-E section?
No. The app provides cognitive and tracking practice. It has no dichotic-listening exercise and does not replace aviation and nautical knowledge study, official familiarisation or every component of the Performance Based Measures.
Which ASTB-E skills should I practise first?
Start with the skills where your practice shows recurring errors. Try arithmetic, spatial and tracking sessions separately, review the feedback, then combine tasks. Use the Navy’s official information to check the actual sections and instructions for your application.
