The Selection Instrument for Flight Training (SIFT) is the US Army's flight aptitude test. The Army Aviation Center of Excellence says it assesses mathematical skills, reading comprehension, mechanical concepts, mental rotation to judge an aircraft's orientation in three-dimensional space, and quick recognition of patterns in objects and images. It also tests aviation knowledge. The same page sets the passing score at 40.
How to practise
Pattern recognition rewards fast, accurate visual scanning: Same or not and Sliding shapes give related practice. 3D objects, Cube nets and Stacks train mental rotation of objects, but none of them shows an aircraft's attitude. The calculation grid and logic sequences train maths speed. Study reading comprehension, mechanical concepts and aviation knowledge with dedicated material.
In the app, open these exercises from the catalogue: Calculation grid, Logic sequences, 3D objects, Cube nets, Stacks, Sliding shapes and Same or not.
Practise with Brain Preflight
Brain Preflight is an iPhone app with short aptitude exercises: mental arithmetic, memory, spatial reasoning, attention and a psychomotor tracking task. Start with 5 free sessions immediately and get 5 more every day, choosing any exercise, without a purchase or subscription. Installed exercises work offline. Optional Premium adds unlimited sessions, mock exams and detailed diagnostics. The interface is available in English, French, German, Spanish and Dutch. The catalogue includes 32 exercises, accessible from All in each interface language. Some exercises use their original content language.
Questions about your preparation
Does Brain Preflight teach all SIFT aviation knowledge?
No. The app trains cognitive skills and does not replace dedicated aviation study or the official candidate material. Plan knowledge study separately from timed arithmetic, spatial and attention exercises.
How should I organise a SIFT practice routine?
Read the official section descriptions first. Identify a weak skill, practise it in a short session and review each error before repeating. Keep a separate study block for aviation knowledge; app levels are practice feedback, not official SIFT scores.
