Edelweiss pilot training: identify the ab initio route

Edelweiss describes its trainee-pilot recruitment as part of the Lufthansa Group process with the European Flight Academy. Start with that route if you are seeking your first commercial-pilot training place. Direct-entry and experienced-pilot vacancies are different applications: use the requirements in the actual vacancy rather than applying a trainee checklist to every cockpit role. For the shared certificate stage, our SWISS guide provides related context.

The detail to check: airline German versus EFA German

Edelweiss’s ab initio factsheet specifies German at C1 level as its company-language requirement. Do not confuse this with the B2 German minimum described for admission to EFA training in Switzerland. A strong aptitude routine cannot replace the language level needed by the airline. Read the linked Edelweiss factsheet and current vacancy before applying, and practise clear spoken explanations of your motivation as well as cognitive exercises.

DLR and the SPHAIR alternative

Edelweiss describes DLR certification and a qualifying SPHAIR route into the Lufthansa Group process. The SPHAIR alternative needs the appropriate completed certificate; EFA’s recommendation and validity conditions still apply. Our SPHAIR-or-DLR comparison helps you distinguish the screening day, flight course and certificate. If you are starting at the beginning, follow the SPHAIR preparation guide instead of treating an app score as proof of suitability.

Your daily Edelweiss aptitude routine

In the DLR programme, combine arithmetic, memory, spatial reasoning and attention with Mechanical comprehension. Technical questions ask you to interpret a diagram before calculating: which parts mesh, which pulley moves with the load, and where does the force act? Use the mechanical-comprehension examples to revise those relationships. The exercise provides explanations in English, French and German.

One useful five-session day is two sessions on your weakest numerical or memory skill, one spatial session, one mechanics session and one attention or psychomotor task. If you make the same mistake twice, pause to explain the rule in your own words. Change the next day’s allocation based on that error rather than simply choosing the most comfortable exercise.

Original practice: explain the result, not just the letter

What is 32% of 250?

A quarter is 62.5 and 7% is 17.5, giving 80. Or multiply 0.32 × 250. Use a size estimate to reject an implausible answer.

Three meshing gears A–B–C form a chain. A turns clockwise. What does C do?

A reverses B, then B reverses C: C turns clockwise. The intermediate gear changes direction twice; it does not make C turn opposite to A.

For interview preparation, also try explaining why you chose Edelweiss using your own research and experience. Do not memorise a generic airline answer. The cognitive app supports the daily skills part; it does not supply interview ratings or official hiring decisions.

Keep the wider application on track

Check certificate documents, language evidence and the current EFA/airline steps separately. Your invitation determines the assessment and any later fit stage. Funding and job offers are contractual questions to confirm with the provider; passing an aptitude exercise does not secure them. Frequently asked questions

Which app programme should Edelweiss applicants choose?

Choose Lufthansa / SWISS / Edelweiss — DLR. It includes arithmetic, memory, spatial, attention, psychomotor and mechanical practice.

Is B2 German enough for Edelweiss?

Do not assume so. Edelweiss’s linked ab initio factsheet specifies C1 German, while EFA’s Swiss-training entry page lists a B2 minimum. Check the current airline vacancy.

Can I start without paying for practice?

Yes. Brain Preflight offers 5 free exercise sessions immediately and every day, on any exercise available in your selected language. Premium is optional.
