Where the aptitude assessment fits in a SWISS application
For ab initio candidates, the European Flight Academy describes a certificate stage before the application and Lufthansa Group assessment. SWISS also publishes an airline-specific selection factsheet. Keep the certificate, the group assessment and the airline fit separate in your planning: passing one stage does not automatically complete the next. This guide concerns cognitive preparation for a trainee pilot application, rather than an experienced-pilot simulator assessment.
DLR certificate or qualifying SPHAIR certificate?
The Swiss EFA route accepts a DLR certificate or a qualifying SPHAIR certificate. For the SPHAIR alternative, the commercial-pilot recommendation and certificate age at the Lufthansa Group assessment matter. Do not assume that attending a SPHAIR screening is enough: it is the completed programme and the relevant certificate that count. Check the current wording with EFA, then use our SPHAIR-versus-DLR decision guide and SPHAIR preparation page to organise the right next step.
What to practise for SWISS pilot selection
Select «Lufthansa / SWISS / Edelweiss — DLR» in Brain Preflight. The routine includes working memory, arithmetic, spatial reasoning, attention, psychomotor tracking and mechanics. Calculation grid helps you keep several arithmetic operations clean under time pressure. 2-back memory trains updating information rather than simply repeating a memorised list. Cube nets and Stacks make you follow relationships between faces or positions.
Mechanical comprehension adds diagram-based reasoning about gears, levers, pulleys, springs and hydraulic pressure. Review the explanation after a wrong answer and name the principle you missed. Our mechanical practice guide starts with worked examples. German and French candidates can practise these technical questions in their own interface language.
Two worked examples for your next session
A speed is 135 km/h. What is that in m/s?
Divide by 3.6: 135 ÷ 3.6 = 37.5 m/s. A second route is 135,000 metres ÷ 3,600 seconds. Write the units in your review log if conversion mistakes recur.
A 12-tooth gear turns at 90 rpm and drives a 36-tooth gear. How fast does the larger gear turn?
Speed is inversely proportional to tooth count: 90 × 12 ÷ 36 = 30 rpm. Since the driven gear is larger, it must turn more slowly. These are original training examples, not SWISS or DLR items.
A preparation checklist for a trainee SWISS pilot
- Create a baseline across the available exercise families; write down whether mistakes come from calculation, memory, rules or steering.
- Use three daily sessions for your weakest families and two for maintenance. Review errors before increasing speed.
- Keep separate time for English and German communication. Check the published EFA and airline language requirements rather than relying on a translated practice interface.
- Prepare real examples of teamwork, feedback, responsibility and learning for the interview stages. Rehearse clear explanations, not a supposedly ideal personality profile.
- Follow the official invitation for documents and logistics. Recheck the current certificate and airline conditions before paying for a test or training place.
SWISS, Edelweiss and neighbouring preparation guides
SWISS and Edelweiss share elements of the EFA/Lufthansa Group route, but airline requirements and fit stages deserve their own check. If you are still choosing a career, the Swiss aptitude-test overview also covers Skyguide air traffic control. App levels describe practice performance, not admission probability; keep official familiarisation and language preparation alongside your daily sessions.

Can I prepare for SWISS pilot selection for free?
Yes. Brain Preflight gives 5 free exercise sessions immediately and every day, including the available exercises in its DLR programme. Premium features are optional.
Does SWISS accept SPHAIR instead of DLR?
EFA describes a qualifying SPHAIR-certificate route for SWISS and Edelweiss. The required commercial-pilot recommendation and certificate validity must be checked against the current EFA conditions.
Does the app include the SWISS interview or simulator selection?
No. It trains related cognitive and psychomotor skills; official interviews, medical steps and airline-specific assessments remain separate.
